Topics
The course will include classroom sessions exploring the techniques used to monitor decompression bubbles (also touching on Doppler audio), bubble pathophysiology, the function of the machines, grading systems and will closely follow the Consensus Guidelines drawn up at Ultrasound 2015 for good practice when designing studies involving bubble monitoring. There will be three practical sessions, where divers will be monitored following wet/dry dives and plenty of opportunities to learn the techniques involved.
The following subjects will be covered:
- - bubble pathophysiology,
- - ultrasound techniques,
- - ultrasound bubble detection,
- - grading systems,
- - how to design and run a study,
- - practical sessions,
General information
Venue:
The course will be held at DNC, located on the Swedish Navy’s Karlskrona Marine Basin. DNC is the ideal meeting location, having a state of the art Haux hyperbaric wet-pot chamber, indoor diving pools and a swim flume, all available for use by visiting researchers. Workshops will take place in the chamber room, with measurements made on a number of divers. The Scandic Hotel Karlskrona will be the residence for lunch, breakfast and lodging. The hotel is modern and comfortable, and located on the waterfront within close walking distance of the central square and shops. Facilities include a gym, wifi, attractive restaurant and bar.
Karlskrona
The city was founded in 1680 when the Royal Swedish Navy was relocated from the Stockholm area to the Trossö island. The city name means Karl's Crown in honour of King Karl XI of Sweden, the name being inspired by the name of the city Landskrona. The city grew quickly and by 1750 Karlskrona had about 10,000 inhabitants. It was then one of the biggest cities in the country. Most of the baroque buildings from this era are still standing, which is why the city centre is architecturally uniform.
The shipyard in Karlskrona was established almost at the same time as the city. It was a necessity because of the heavy losses the Swedish navy had suffered in 1689. In 1711, the shipyard was Sweden's largest industrial employer with 1,100 workers. Parts of the city (mainly the Naval Port, where DNC is located) have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The course is open to all with an interest in ultrasound for diving research.
Date:
October 12th – 13th 2016.
Accreditation:
The course is part of the international certification of Diving Medicine Physicians and has been accredited with 16 CME points for Diving Medicine Physicians and Medical Examiners of Divers.
Certificate:
On completion of the course, all participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
