Topics
Epidemiology of diving accidents:
A review of recent studies of diving accidents worldwide: the introduction and justification for this course.
Basic principles of hyperbaric physics and physiology:
The influence of atmospheric and hydrostatic pressure on the human body will be addressed. Topics include the aspects of physics that are relevant to diving medicine, the phenomenon of bubble formation and the physiology of decompression.
Diving diseases: An overview of causality, diagnosis and prevention of diving diseases is given in relation to the different phases of a dive: descent, bottom time and ascent.
International guidelines for the diving medical examination: This unit teaches the practitioner to conduct a diving medical examination and provide sound medical advice to divers. It will be delivered as three separate subunits. The first addresses the effects of diving on important and critical existing pathology and the influence of that pathology on diving safety. The second looks at other non-critical pathology the medical practitioner may encounter during the diving medical. The third subunit illustrates how a diving medical examination should be performed.
Case studies:Case studies on diving medical problems are presented over the course of the program. They will be discussed in small work groups and are used to highlight important points from the lectures.
Diving in practice: Students who do not yet have a scuba qualification, are offered the opportunity to complete an entry level open water course. Certified divers can choose between advanced diving courses or a ten dive package (see registration form for options)
General information
Location:
This year the course will take place on the island of the Gods, beautiful Bali. We are hosted in the stunning 5* Siddhartha Resort. This resort is situated on the east side of Bali right by the sea, far from the major tourist areas. The 30 bungalows and three villas (with two separate bedrooms and private pool) are in perfect harmony with nature on a terraced hillside. The beautiful tropical garden has been created with great expertise and attention to detail. And all with a breath-taking view of the 3241m high volcano, Mount Agung. Besides the beautiful bungalows in which you stay, there is also a conference room and a dive shop on the resort. Furthermore there is a large swimming pool, a cosy bar, a good restaurant and an excellent spa & massage suite. In short, a place you do not want to leave. There are the most beautiful dive sites on the doorstep, like the famous wreck of the US Liberty. At these dive sites you will find a lot of fish, including sharks, and sometimes a whale or whale shark. There are also beautiful nudibranchs, (pygmy) sea horses, frog fishes, Napoleon wrasses and basically anything you can find in tropical waters around Indonesia. Take a drive, and you're at the sites of Ahmed or Nusa Penida for mantas and mola mola. There are also many opportunities for shore excursions, for example climbing the Gunung Agung.
